MLK2017-1Mayor Libby Schaaf and the Dedicated Deadheaders

Over 180 volunteers, including groups from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Williams Sonoma, participated in the MLK Day of Service.  They worked on a massive weeding project, excavated an old stone wall, applied zoo poo, dug holes for planting new roses, and pruned.

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Parks Maintenance Award

deadheader award 1

Public Works recently recognized the Dedicated Deadheaders by awarding them the Parks Maintenance Award for their volunteer contributions to the maintenance of the Morcom Rose Garden since 2008, and for their expanding contributions to maintenance and public event programming at other City of Oakland parks.

The Dedicated Deadheaders have recorded over 11,000 volunteer hours. Their year-round efforts help the Morcom Rose Garden thrive and have also been critical to the success of the Autumn Lights Festival fundraiser for Oakland Parks.

In Our Garden

The Morcom Rose Garden is a rare 7+ acre green oasis located on Jean Street, one block off Grand Avenue in Oakland, CA. This jewel of a public garden is a 30’s era formal rose garden surrounded by winding paths, graceful stairways, dramatic water features, and enough natural habitat to attract and provide a sanctuary for a variety of birds, including hawks, as well as the neighbors who walk through it regularly.  Recently accredited by the American Rose Society, the Morcom Rose Garden is an asset for all of Oakland.
