Oakland: Morcom Rose Garden welcomes help for upkeep — East Bay Times

OAKLAND — Given its visual appeal and quiet outdoor setting, Oakland’s Morcom Rose Garden offers much for tourists and locals alike.

A great place for a Sunday stroll or a morning jog, this picturesque and colorful place — an urban oasis and home to many varieties of roses — provides a soothing atmosphere. And it’s not just the plants, as visitors can enjoy waterworks and a pond, and sometimes other visitors, such as a wild turkey.

During his lifetime, Peter Wyeth Hurd took many a walk through the garden with his wife, Victoria. A musician by profession, Hurd — a nephew of famed artist Andrew Wyeth — found both inspiration and respite in Morcom, located close to where he lived.

Earth Day Celebration, 4/22/2017

Over 20 volunteers from PGE participated in the Earth Day Celebration at
Morcom Rose Garden.  They did a great job attacking and decimating the
never-ending weeds!

Mayor Libby Schaaf Visits Morcom Rose Garden, MLK Day of Service, 1/14/2017

Over 180 volunteers, including groups from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Williams Sonoma, participated in the MLK Day of Service.  They worked on a massive weeding project, excavated an old stone wall, applied zoo poo, dug holes for planting new roses, and pruned.

Dedicated Deadheaders awarded Parks Maintenance Award

Public Works recently recognized the Dedicated Deadheaders by awarding them the Parks Maintenance Award for their volunteer contributions to the maintenance of the Morcom Rose Garden since 2008, and for their expanding contributions to maintenance and public event programming at other City of Oakland parks.

The Dedicated Deadheaders have recorded over 11,000 volunteer hours. Their year-round efforts help the Morcom Rose Garden thrive and have also been critical to the success of the Autumn Lights Festival fundraiser for Oakland Parks.
